One of the reasons I hardly get it wrong with supplements is because I don’t just go with the hype.
I actually test every product I put up here. It’s the only way I can give you unbiased and credible info (Just how awesome can anyone ever get!).
So up on our menu today is Glutamine powder – one of the coolest kids in the supplements block.
But, who really is this guy? What does it do? And the biggest question of the day – is it worth your money?
We have that, and more. In the mood for a ride? Well…
What is Glutamine Powder?
Glutamine powder is a product from Optimum Nutrition – one of the supplements giants of our time.
The product is made of purely Glutamine. Yes, 100% pure glutamine without any artificial additives or sweeteners (sorry sugar lovers!).
So, what’s glutamine? Or so you ask.
L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid. If you were attentive in your Biology classes, you know it naturally occurs in the body as the building blocks of proteins.
Glutamine originates from the muscles and is transported to all the organs that need it through the blood.
How Does Glutamine Powder Work?
Once produced in the muscles, Glutamine is transported to most body parts where it helps with muscle growth, muscle recovery, good gut health, and better immunity.
Apart from what the body naturally produces, Glutamine is also present in foods such as;
- White rice
- Skim milk
A typical diet contains between 3 to 6 grams of Glutamine. However, that depends on your diet, according to this research.
The Glutamine content in these foods is owed to their high protein content.
Benefits of Glutamine Powder
Here’s why you should consume Glutamine powder;
1. Improved immune system
Glutamine plays a crucial role in boosting your immune system.
Immune cells such as the white blood cells all depend on Glutamine as their source of energy.
Several studies, including this one, also show that Glutamine is essential for patients undergoing surgeries hence shorter hospital stays.
Other studies also prove that Glutamine can help your immune system fight various bacteria and viruses.
2. Improved gut health
Your intestines are some of your most crucial body parts. Despite playing a crucial role in your health and wellness, they are also home to lots of bacteria.
That, therefore, requires that your immune system is at its best. And, that’s where Glutamine comes in.
Glutamine is an excellent source of energy for immune and intestinal cells.
It’ll also help avoid instances of a leaky gut, where what’s inside your intestines mixes with other body parts. This also curbs the spread of bacteria from your gut to other body parts.
3. Muscle gain and improved performance
If thou hast been a faithful follower, then thou must have known by now that proteins play a crucial role in muscle health.
To support this claim, many studies, including this one, have proven the effectiveness of Glutamine muscle growth and performance.
For even better muscle health, Glutamine helps cure muscle soreness after intense workouts, even aiding muscle recovery.
Glutamine and Weight-loss
Glutamine is closely linked with healthy weight loss in overweight individuals. So, how does it help with weight loss? Glad you asked.
Glutamine promotes fat burning by encouraging the secretion of HGH – Human Growth Hormone.
Glutamine prompts the growth hormone to increase the metabolic rate, hence maximum weight loss.
Supplementing with Glutamine will also give you a lean body mass and more likely reduce your tummy size. How about that?
Pros and cons
What I like:
- Contains no artificial ingredients
- Helps with muscle growth and recovery
- Boosts immunity
- Mixes easily
What I don’t like:
- Its tasteless nature might irritate some users
Glutamine Powder Dosage
Still with me? Awesome. A little recap won’t kill, right?
Remember we earlier noted that Glutamine is naturally produced in the body? It is.
However, the body’s needs mostly surpass what we consume on a typical diet and what the body produces.
So, where does the extra come from? You guessed that right – Glutamine powder.
How much of it should you take? A daily dosage of 15gm for those on high-intensity workouts like me is good enough.
For those who don’t work out much, 10gm daily is fine.
How I Take Glutamine
I mix one teaspoonful of the powder in a glass of water and take a glass in the morning when I wake up and another in the evening before bed.
If water doesn’t work for you (the taste can be boring, I know), you can use your favorite beverage. Cool, right?
Glutamine Powder – Side effects
The side effects of a product are one of the crucial things I consider before putting it up here for you.
Instead of going with some flashy reviews or adverts, I actually get to use the product.
Glutamine is generally safe. You can consume up to 400 grams a day (yes, you read that right).
Personally, I didn’t experience any side effects. However, some users have reported such mild side effects as;
- Stomach upset
Glutamine Powder – Is it worth your money?
Not into weight lifting? Well, you need it for an improved immune system. No? then you definitely need it for your gut health.
Couple up Glutamine with a healthy diet and productive workouts and you’ll enjoy its health benefits even more.
So, how about you make the boss move and get yourself a bottle?
Does Glutamine powder work?

However, not enough is known about its safety for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Avoid using unless under the strict watch of a healthcare provider.
Is Glutamine safe for children?
Yes. However, not much is known about the effects of higher doses in children. Be sure to seek the advice of your doctor before giving your child the supplement.
Does Glutamine help with weight loss?
Yes. Glutamine promotes higher metabolic rates which translate to maximum fat loss. Glutamine also helps you achieve a leaner body and helps overweight and obese people lose weight.
